The home has always been a compelling subject for Japanese architects. The importance of this topic is underscored by the fact that a wide range of Japanese architects, from emerging talents to renowned masters, have made it the focus of their architectural practice. The awarding of the 2024 Pritzker Prize to Riken Yamamoto, due to his theory on the design of residential complexes, is further evidence of the high significance of this field among Japanese architects. They possess considerable experience in housing, not only in qualitative terms but also quantitatively. The Japanese successfully increased the housing stock from a deficit of about 4.7 million units in 1945 to a surplus of 2.6 million units by 1978.

In this course, we will examine the most important ideas related to the contemporary home from three perspectives: spatial planning, construction technology, and an artistic viewpoint, focusing on the period after World War II. The projects and ideas covered in this course will range from small houses to large residential complexes, encompassing personal home building and the experience of public and social housing.
