Tectonic Series: An Introduction and Several Narratives
Curator: Mohammadreza Gholami
In this session, we will introduce the historical roots of the term “tectonic” in architecture and key ideas from theorists who have explored this concept, along with examples of notable architectural works from ancient times to the present.
We will explore how construction (which historically precedes architecture) can create meaning. To achieve this, we will examine the origins of architecture in early societies and address the following questions:
– How do materials and their applications lead to the creation of meaning, emotion, or thought?
– Is the manner in which a building is constructed important, or is only the final product significant?
– Can builders play a role in creating architectural meaning, or is it solely the architect’s domain?
– How can time alter the concept of architecture?
– What values can architecture create during or after its construction?

Understanding contemporary architecture in our country is impossible without recognizing the transformations that have occurred in Iran over the past two centuries. Changes in construction methods, the creation of buildings based on plans, the emergence of the architect as a new player, the introduction of new materials and techniques, the formation of modern urban functions, and the evolution of the educational system with the establishment of the first educational institution for architecture and art—the Faculty of Fine Arts—are among these transformations.
One aspect that has been less explored among these changes is the emergence of a new class of artisans. Professions such as blacksmithing, casting, carpentry, and other craftsmanship have flourished during this period and have had an undeniable impact on the history of modern Iranian architecture.
In this session, we will address the following topics:
– What historical transformations led to the emergence of modern branches of craftsmanship?
– What were their roots in Iranian architectural traditions, and what role did they play during this period of transformation?
– What impact did the presence of architects and their educational backgrounds have on these transformations?
– Finally, what is the potential of today’s architecture to utilize this heritage?
