Summer School Lecture Series
Curator: Pouyan Rouhi
The Summer Lecture Series, curated by Pouyan Rouhi, examines technology research as a method of production in contemporary architecture. In these lectures:
– Amin Adelzadeh will explore a research path in the development of advanced construction systems for the industrial production of prefabricated and lightweight wooden structures.
– Zobin Khabbazi will discuss the challenges in this field as well as design-oriented research.
– Sina Mostafavi will share his insights on how emerging design and production technologies influence the creation and collaborative construction processes.
Using wood as one of the most important sustainable materials in architecture and construction has a history that spans as long as human history itself. Wooden systems and connections have always played a key role in advancing methods for optimizing prefabricated structures. The application of geometric processing methods in computational modeling and the advancement of interactors in industrial tools, particularly over the past two decades, has led to the revival, manipulation, and optimal use of many of these wooden connections and systems. As a result, the rapid, efficient, and precise construction of lightweight and cost-effective prefabricated wooden structures has become possible.
Through the analysis of recent built examples, this lecture will explore a research path in the development of advanced construction systems for the industrial production of prefabricated and lightweight wooden structures.
Session One: Industrialized Timber Tectonic
Speaker: Amin Adelzadeh
Date: July 1, 2023
Time: 17:30
One of the essential tools for successful architecture in today’s world is research. Research is not merely a library endeavor aimed at writing a theoretical article for publication in a scientific journal. Alongside theoretical content, research into design methods, construction techniques, materials, optimization, and various other practical topics can advance our understanding of contemporary architecture and foster innovation in its design and construction processes. This discussion will address the challenges in this field as well as the topic of design-oriented research.
Session Two: Archimedes or Da Vinci; Architectural Research, from Discovery to Architecture
Speaker: Zobin Khabbazi
Date: August 1, 2023
Time: 17:30
In this session, Sina Mostafavi, Associate Professor at Texas A&M University (School of Architecture), will discuss his insights on how the creation and collaborative construction processes are being transformed by emerging design and production technologies. His emphasis will be on the importance of developing creative frameworks that facilitate human-machine collaboration, with a focus on executing cyclical and resource-based construction methods. He will introduce the broad applications of this research and explain how calculations and automation impact research, education, and practical applications in the fields of architecture, engineering, and construction.
Session Three: Architecture in the Age of Hybrid Intelligence; Research, Education, and Work
Speaker: Sina Mostafavi
Date: August 19, 2023
Time: 17:30
