Historiography and understanding of Iran’s past architecture have undergone significant changes in recent decades, influenced by global transformations in the historiography of art and architecture. These changes have not yet been fully reflected in the education and research of architecture and art within Iran. This course will critique the prevailing approaches in Iran and introduce new methodologies for the historiography and interpretation of Iranian architecture, especially in the post-Islamic era. These transformations are rooted in the application of new humanities approaches, postcolonial historiography, and the scholarly contributions of local researchers active in European countries.

Course Outline:

  • Prevailing Approaches Before 1970: Positivism, Formalism, Traditionalism

  • Architectural History, Semiotics, and Structuralism

  • Postcolonial Historiography of Architecture: Challenging Dualities

  • Ideology, History of Ideas, and Architecture

  • Power, Politics, and Architecture

  • Lived Experience, Literature, and the City
